Basic Clerkship / Observership in Clinical Cardiology for MBBS students - Optional Summer Vacation Fortnight Course


            The depts. of Cardiology proposes to conduct a two week summer clerkship / observership in Clinical Cardiology for MBBS students (6th / 8th semesters). The two week course proposes to enroll about 6-12 interested students who would visit the dept. of Cardiology and observe / learn the regular patient care work and learn important basic skills in Clinical Cardiology. 

            A Pre-test and a Post-test and other forms of assessment  would be conducted and all successful students who attend the department regularly and pass in the tests and fulfil all other requirements would be presented Certificates. 

Instructions to Students

Please enroll only if willing to follow all the rules & instructions. If the schedule is not feasible to you or you are unable to participate fully due to other commitments, please opt out now itself and give a chance to someone else (we have a huge waiting list!!)


1. The observership is for two weeks = 14 days. You must attend AT LEAST 12 days – which means 8.45AM upto 2 PM or sometimes a bit later. You will visit the section where you are posted to and observer the work there, shadow the duty doctor, assist as told, and do other work as told, see patients, etc.
You will NOT make any independent decisions or give any advice to patients without the permission and supervision of the duty doctor.
Remember you are a trainee student and not authorized to independently treat /advise /  patients or discuss with them their treatment / prognosis etc.

2. You must attend to at least two evening duties (2.30PM to 9PM) and at least two night duties (9PM to 7AM) and shadow the duty doctor and assist them.

3. You will maintain a log book / portfolio of your daily posting, work done there and note down any important cases, ECGs, Echoes, etc. You will get it signed daily by the duty doctor / staff nurse / 
technician.  

4. A nominal and optional fee of Rs.200 may be paid to the department. (more to ensure commitment to the course and completing it)

5. You should write your case notes in the case sheet and mark it as (by student) under permission from the duty doctor.

6. You will maintain and observe  the professional ethics as mandated.

7. You will maintain the seriousness and sanctity of the hospital and wards, etc. and ensure that you do not cause any damage to any equipment, etc.

8. You will fulfil the requirements as mentioned below in the “Credit Points” section and ensure that you qualify for the pass certificate.

9. This is a credit point based course and the minimum points to be secured for each section (and maximum that can be scored in each section) are given below – those who score the minimum marks in each section Only will be given certificates at the end of the course.

10. Lunch, tea, etc. would be on your own.

                                Heart failure - diag. & ttmt 
                                Arrhythmia –AF, VT, CHB
                                Emergencies – MI, acute LVF, tamponade, 
                                                         cardiogenic shock  
                                 CPR (on manikin) 
                                Writing case sheets & discharge notes 
                                 Advising patients (under supervision)
