Felicitations to Dr.G.Subrahmanyam, Eminent Cardiologist

The state of Andhra Pradesh is blessed to have several stalwarts in the field of Medicine who have created a legacy to serve the health needs of the society - and in that domain, will be a place reserved for an inspirational cardiologist  of our times – Dr.Gangapatnam  Subrahmanyam, alumnus of Guntur Medical College and current Director of the Narayana Medical Institutions.
After completing his MBBS from Guntur, he pursued his MD in Medicine and DM in Cardiology from the Delhi University where he honed his clinical and professional skills under several eminent physicians, such as the Dr.Padmavathi, besides undergoing specialisted training in Pacing & Electrophysiology.  He served the Government of Andhra Pradesh as Assistant Professor of Medicine and Cardiology before being promoted to the post of Professor of Cardiology in 1975. He was instrumental in building the departments of Cardiology as Professor and Head, in Guntur Medical College and SV Medical College, Tirupati, and creating a rich work culture of dedicated health care and professional services, on par with contemporary practices elsewhere.
It was in the medical college, that this young professor, with his keen enthusiasm and benevolent demeanour, attracted and inspired many a student to take up Medicine and Cardiology. Students still fondly remember his classes vividly for their ease and simplicity – many a student personally benefited from his personalized tutoring and mentoring. Several of his students have done well as cardiologists and are living testimony to his ideals and professionalism.
Dr Subrahmanyam has the distinction of starting superspeciality courses in Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati where he was also the Director and Vice Chancellor, and later starting similar courses in the Kathmandu University of Nepal.
Dr G Subrahmanyam has the rare honor of being a blend of a good clinician, an excellent teacher and an avid medical researcher. His areas of interest include Trace Elements in Atherosclerosis and Stem Cell Research and it is pure delight and awe to watch him, to this day, arrive at his department at 8AM, complete his teaching assignment, attend to his patients and then visit his research lab to continue his work or write his reports – upto 5PM or even more, with his energy and enthusiasm remaining undiminished.
Erudite yet humble, the empathy and compassion Dr Subrahmanhyam  exudes have endeared him to his peers and patients alike. A humanist and philanthropist to the core, he has given munificient donations to help needy students in his native districts and has created a trust for the same – International Helping Hearts Association in 2011. He set up a GK Memorial Trust to renovate and assist temples – he helped build a temple to his favorite diety – Lord Venkateswara in his home town of Koverapalli, Nellore.
He served several associations and societies as President and Secretary, including the AP State Chapter of the Cardiological Society of India and the Indian Society of Atherosclerosis Research. A recipient of several awards –  Best Cardiologist, Best Researcher, Best Teacher, and Lifetime Achievement to name a few – yet, he is most happy guiding his students and watching them excel.
Sir, Professor Gangapatnam Subrahmanyam, we salute you for what you have created for us a. s a teacher, as a clinician, as a researcher, and look forward to many more fruitful years of academic accomplishments from you.

21st Annual State Conference – 2016 (September 10th & 11th) – Visakhapatnam

Felicitations to Dr.IAV Prasad Lal, Eminent Cardiologist

Two places in Vizag are showered with a very special name that attracts immediate attention – the Gold Medal Winner boards in Andhra Medical College and the Tree Hoardings along the roads of Visakhapatnam – that is the name of our beloved Cardiologist – Dr.IAV Prasad Lal.
From a tiny town of Kurupam, in Vizianagaram district, to being the first and leading Cardiologist of the city of Destiny, the story of Sri Ippili Annaji Varaprasad Lal is one of perseverance, hard work and courage. Born on 23rd April 1949, to Sri Ippili Ramakrishnaiah and Sitamahalakshmi, Prasad Lal had his early schooling in his home town of Kurupam, at the DPVD Zilla Parishad High School where he earned showers of praise from his teachers. Later he studied at the Loyola College, Vijayawada, before entering the hallowed portals of Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam in 1967.
He made a mark for himself in the medical college, winning laurels all the way – and the many boards which display his name as the winner of gold medals and prizes, bear testimony to his intelligence and proficiency.  He was the proud recipient of Dr Swaminathan Medal in Anatomy, Dr Narayana Menon Medal in Biochemistry and the Vikram Deo Medal in Medicine. He was one among the few doctors, who succeeded, purely out of diligence and determination, in securing a seat in the prestigious twin temples of medical training – the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh and  the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, where he did his DM in Cardiology.
Soon thereafter, Dr Prasad Lal returned to Visakhapatnam and served as Assistant Professor in Cardiology in Andhra Medical College for 6 years. Though it was brief, during his tenure at his Alma Mater, Dr Lal soon made a name for himself among the students and patients of the hospital – scores of students would flock to his ward as he taught them the nuances of Cardiology and ECG interpretation, often taking special classes at odd hours. Simultaneously, he set up practice in the city and soon his reputation spread far and wide as he offered specialized Cardiology services to the sick and needy.
Difficult and impractical working rules imposed by the Government of the day forced Dr Prasad Lal to resign rather than compromise on his ideals and principles. He decided to become a full time practitioner thus benefiting hordes of patients who could now get complete Cardiology services – all under one roof and within half a day.
Name, fame and fortune came Dr Prasad Lal’s way and, slowly, the magnanimous side of him came to the fore and we were witness to his greathearted and liberal donations. Besides profuse assistance to his home town of Kurupam, he has given generously to the college and several organizations, including the massive tree plantation program that was undertaken after the Hudhud disaster that struck Vizag.
Happily married to Lakshmi, the couple is blessed with a son Rakesh and daughter Rakhi, both married and well settled.
Sir, we thank you profusely, for all the services that you have rendered to improve the cardiac health of the people of this region and wish you many more years of productive and prosperous life. May the Lord Almighty shower his best blessings on you and your family.
